All New Prototyper 3.0 Now Shipping!
Portland, OR--August 15, 1990--SmethersBarnes announced and began shipping
the third generation of their innovative interface building tool today,
Prototyper™ 3.0. According to Randy Hill, Product Manager, "version 3.0 has
been extensively re-written to satisfy the requests generated by its
predecessors. It has greatly improved editing, simulation, and code generation
capabilities."
Custom Controls, Window Definitions, Palettes and Sounds
Prototyper 3.0 builds on the award winning features of version 2.0 by adding
support for custom controls (e.g., sliders, gauges, toggle switches, etc.);
custom window definitions (like HyperCard-style windoids); tool palettes (ala
PageMaker and MacPaint); and sounds.
David Burnham, Quality Assurance Supervisor at Symantec, thinks "all the new
editing features make it extremely easy to extend the standard Macintosh
interface. Creatively, it opens up all kinds of doors."
More Powerful Linking
"It's hard to overestimate the value of Prototyper's simulation capabilities,"
said Michael Hunt, Manager of Machine Intelligence Technologies at General
Physics Corporation. "By letting me show my customers exactly what they will
be getting, Prototyper has already help me land a huge programming job for the
U.S. Navy. And now that I can link to sounds I can produce self-contained
prototypes that customers can go through without my having to be there. To
make things as authentic as possible, it will even let me link to simulate time
delays for things like disk accesses."
To help programmers better analyze their designs, most linking limitations have
been removed. For example, you can now link from dialogs to open and close
windows, something not possible with earlier versions of Prototyper. The new
tool palette feature allows linking from individual palette items.
More Intelligent Code and Resource Generation
Version 3.0 can regenerate code for a prototype after it is modified — without
losing any code that may have been added by hand. For noted author and
programmer Dan Shafer, this is version 3.0's most significant feature: "Being
able to regenerate code fits the way programmers really work. Programs are
always created iteratively."
"Because the source generated by Prototyper 3.0 is 32-bit clean and MultiFinder
aware it's a great tool for teaching students professional coding techniques"
claims Jean Scholtz, Asst. Professor of Computer Science at Portland State
University. "The fact that Prototyper now automatically generates Printing and
File I/O code and provides special hooks to make it easier to take advantage of
Color QuickDraw and math coprocessors means we can spend more time with our
students on programming problems unique to their projects, and let Prototyper
take care of the routine things. In fact, that's really the whole point of
Prototyper: to let you focus on the design of your application without having
to worry about how to implement that design."
Dan Shafer is also impressed by how much the manual has been expanded to help
programmers take advantage of all of these new capabilities: "The step-by-step
tutorial is excellent. It really brings you up to speed quickly. Plus there's
much more information on the structure of the generated code. It's really a
very comprehensive reference and user's guide."
Registered Prototyper owners can upgrade to version 3.0 for only $79 — $220 off
of its $299 suggested list price. The upgrade includes the complete
Prototyper 3.0 package. Upgrade orders and information requests can be placed
toll-free by calling 1-800-336-4945.
When SmethersBarnes launched Prototyper 1.0 in 1988 it was the first tool that
let Macintosh programmers work the way they think: visually. Prototyper 2.0,
which added 'C' code generation and a host of other valuable features began
shipping in 1989.
SmethersBarnes is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Now Software, Inc.
